چکیده

In this paper we overview and discuss some of the important practical assumptions underlying statistical inference. What we say, though not new, is stressed insu ciently in teaching statistical methods and applications. We build on the important conceptual di erence between enumerative and analytic studies, emphasized by W. Edwards Deming. Our comments, however, go beyond the published views of Deming and, on occasion, depart from those of some of his followers. We emphasize that the assumptions needed for valid inferences from an analytic study are fundamentally di erent from those needed in an enumerative study and illustrate the basic ideas with examples.

Statistical Inference in Autoregressive Models with Non-negative Residuals

Normal residual is one of the usual assumptions of autoregressive models but in practice sometimes we are faced with non-negative residuals case. In this paper we consider some autoregressive models with non-negative residuals as competing models and we have derived the maximum likelihood estimators of parameters based on the modified approach and EM algorithm for the competing models. Also,...

The Statistics of Causal Inference: A View from Political Methodology

Many areas of political science focus on causal questions. Evidence from statistical analyses is often used to make the case for causal relationships. While statistical analyses can help establish causal relationships, it can also provide strong evidence of causality where none exists. In this essay, I provide an overview of the statistics of causal inference. Instead of focusing on specific st...

Statistical inference in a redesigned Radial Basis Function neural network

A Hybrid Learning Process method was fitted into a RBF. The resulting redesigned RBF intends to show how to test if the statistical assumptions are fulfilled and to apply statistical inference to the redesigned RBFNN bearing in mind that it allows to determine the relationship between a response (to a process) and one or more independent variables, testing how much each factor contributes to th...

Classical and causal inference approaches to statistical mediation analysis

Resumen Background: Although there is a broad consensus on the use of statistical procedures for mediation analysis in psychological research, the interpretation of the effect of mediation is highly controversial because of the potential violation of the assumptions required in application, most of which are ignored in practice. Method: This paper summarises two currently independent procedures...
